The Fishing...

This is what fishing in Alaska is all about.

Gin clear streams loaded with waves of Pacific salmon.  Huge, ocean-bright king salmon that can turn that Sage 10-weight into a splintered mess if you're not on top of your game.  Spawning sockeyes so abundant they can change the color of entire runs.  Fiery arctic char crowded in behind the redds, vacuuming up any stray salmon eggs that happen to slide downstream from the spawning salmon.  Heavy-shouldered Coho salmon that slam a streamer and then vault into the air and into your backing.

While salmon and char fishing in Alaska is usually done with sinking lines and weighted streamers, Jon Kent has helped pioneer a thrilling alternative at Painter Creek Lodge.  Because Painter Creek is so close to the ocean, the silver and chum salmon as well as the Arctic char and rainbow trout will enthusiastically attack surface flies.

In popper fishing for salmon, you fling a fluorescent pink popper straight across the stream, throw in a big downstream mend to start the popper waking, and then start making short, hard strips that gurgle the popper.  Suddenly, a broad, v-shaped bulge appears behind the fly, tracking it like the shark from Jaws.  Then, the cavernous mouth of a silver torpedo opens behind the fly and with a sudden burst of speed the Coho engulfs the fly and you're of to the races.  It's a style of flyfishing that will make you giggle with glee (and wear out your arms).  Best of all, the chums, char, and rainbows will all respond to the same technique.

It's amazing.
